MARVEL-LUCASFILM-20th Century Studios

Many Disneyana on Stamps Society members collect the Marvel, Lucasfilm and 20th Century Studios stamps, some include them under the Disney stamps banner others keep them separate. A recent survey indicated that members preferred them to be separate by a 4-1 ratio. Therefore, in an effort to conform to the collecting style of the majority of members Marvel, Lucasfilm and 20th Century Studios stamps with a Disney connection now have a separate page within DoSS with all the information about them, checklists, new issues etc., contained here. Those who think that Marvel stamps should be part of a Disney collection can easily copy the checklist below and amend their Disneyana checklists.

Marvel Entertainment, LLC was founded in June 1998 and based in New York City, formed by the merger of Marvel Entertainment Group, Inc. and ToyBiz. The company is now a wholly owned subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company, acquired in 2009, and is mainly known for its Marvel Comics, Marvel Animation, and Marvel Television units. Marvel Studios, formerly under the Marvel umbrella, became a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Studios, where it develops and produces a universe of films that shares continuity with some of the shows produced by the television unit.

Over the years, Marvel Entertainment has entered into several partnerships and negotiations with other companies across a variety of businesses. As of 2018, Marvel has film licensing agreements with 20th Century Fox (for X-Men films and Fantastic Four films), Sony Pictures (for Spider-Man films), and Universal Pictures (a right of first refusal to pick up the distribution rights to any future Hulk films produced by Marvel Studios), and a theme park licensing agreement with Universal Parks & Resorts (for specific Marvel character rights at Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Japan). Aside from their contract with Universal Parks & Resorts, Marvel's characters and properties have also appeared at Disney Parks.

Lucasfilm Ltd. LLC is based in the Letterman Digital Arts Center in San Francisco, CA. The studio is best known for creating and producing the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises, as well as its leadership in developing special effects, sound and computer animation for film. Lucasfilm was founded by filmmaker George Lucas in 1971 in San Rafael, California; most of the company's operations were moved to San Francisco in 2005. The Walt Disney Company acquired Lucasfilm in December 2012. Lucasfilm had previously collaborated with the company's Walt Disney Imagineering division to create theme park attractions centered on Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Captain EO, for various Walt Disney Parks and Resorts worldwide.

Along with Marvel and Lucasfilm, we can now add 20th Century Studios to the list of Disneyana on Stamps. Previously known as Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation the company was purchased by Disney on March 20, 2019 and now serves as a film production arm of Walt Disney Studios, a division of The Walt Disney Company. On December 4, 2020 the company changed it’s name to 20th Century Studios, Inc. for the copyright of 20th Century Studios and Searchlight Pictures productions as a Disney subsidiary. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures distributes and markets the films produced by 20th Century Studios in theatrical markets.

The first set of stamps to be released that would fall under the Disneyana on Stamps banner is from New Zealand and commemorates the release of Avatar: The Way of Water, which was filmed simultaneously with a currently untitled third film, began in Manhattan Beach, California, in 2017, moved to Wellington, New Zealand in September 2017, and concluded in late September 2020 after three years of shooting.

Disney extensively promoted Avatar: The Way of Water across multiple media platforms, including merchandising, consumer products, theme parks and advertising. In June 2022, the trailer was shown ahead of the theatrical screenings of Pixar's Lightyear. The film was theatrically released in the United States on December 16, 2022, with distribution by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures through the 20th Century Studios label. The film is the first in the series to be released under Disney since its acquisition of both 20th Century Studios and the rights to Avatar in 2019.
